A Major U.S. Company
FORTRAN to JAVA
History: A major U.S. Company determined that one of its legacy systems be “sun set”. The legacy FORTRAN / DCL based application was required to be ported from the Alpha hardware and OpenVMS operating system to Intel Xeon series and Red Hat Linux. The Company selected modern Java as the “sunrise” target code. Initially, CSC was the lead integrator on this project and they selected The Software Revolution, Inc. (TSRI) for its automated legacy modernization processes. During Phase II of this project, this major company’s own IT department has assumed integration tasks.
Challenge: The legacy system consisted of 3,270,468 lines of Fortran source code with 1,964,766 comments. This system also had 164,729 lines of DCL source code with 223,104 comments. TSRI’s JANUS Studio® already contained robust FORTRAN capabilities; however initial set-up was required to ingest the DCL code into the Intermediate Object Model (IOM) of the JANUS Studio®.
Results: Once set up was completed, TSRI engaged JANUS Studio® to generate a Transformation Blueprint ® to assist in the systems design architecture and to guide phase II of the project.
Project Schedule: This project was completed in less than 5 months, (June of 2009 to October 2009).
