Stanley and Associates (Now CGI)
AFATDS
Ada to Java

History: Stanley and Assoc. contracted The Software Revolution, Inc. (TSRI) to modernize the Battle Command Software - Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS). This system is an integrated system that provides the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps automated fire support command, control and communications. Prior to this modernization, AFATDS was written in legacy ADA-83. The target code selected for the AFATDS modernization was Java.
Challenge:The sheer size of the system, over 5.1 Million LOC, is TSRI’s largest modernization by source lines of code. TSRI software engineers were excited to showcase their automated processes and leverage their extensive experience in modernizing legacy systems written in the Ada language. To further challenge these engineers and the capabilities of TSRI’s JANUS Studio®, the contract included a Phase-1 completion date of only 10 months.
Phase-One Complete: This particular system contained many Ada constructs un-encountered by TSRI during previous Ada modernizations. As a result, TSRI software engineers worked 50 hour weeks during July to meet the contracted deadline. On August 31st, 2010, Stanley & Associates was delivered, on schedule, a modern Java AFATDS system that compiled and linked. TSRI will provide engineering support during initial testing of the modern AFATDS system. Following testing, TSRI will begin the Automated Re-Factoring phase of this project.
