2008 - Navigant/TSRI Team Expands Major Health

"Navigant/TSRI Team Expands Major Health Care Modernization Project"

Kirkland, WA. (June 18, 2008) – The Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois has awarded a second ‘follow-on’ contract to the team of Navigant Consulting and The Software Revolution, Inc. (TSRI) to modernize that organization’s Stop Loss System. Under this contract, TSRI will be providing its full array of documentation, transformation, re-factoring and engineering support services to this next in a series of PowerBuilder and MagnaX legacy systems needing modernization.

Greg Tadlock, TSRI’s Vice President, Sales & Marketing said, “The success of TSRI and its system integration partner (Navigant) on the first HCSC system modernization project has led to our team being awarded the next system that HCSC needs to have modernized. The first contract afforded TSRI the opportunity to show the JANUS Studio®    toolset’s flexibility and adaptability as we addressed two new legacy languages simultaneously. This ‘follow-on’ effort is a direct result of that success. At the same time, we hope that the IT community now recognizes that TSRI has a fully automated capability to modernize legacy PowerBuilder and Magna X code when the need arises.”

2008 - Sandia National Labs Selects TSRI

"Sandia National Labs Selects TSRI To Support Classified Modernization Project"

Kirkland, WA. (May, 19, 2008) – Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) has awarded a sole-source contract to The Software Revolution, Inc. (TSRI) to provide Sandia with a JANUS Studio®     Toolset Seat License, and training in its use, which will allow lab personnel to transform classified Fortran code.

Greg Tadlock, TSRI’s Vice President, Sales & Marketing said, “TSRI’s standard approach to systems modernization is through the provision of services to our customers. In those cases however, where classified military system code cannot be declassified for delivery to TSRI, the JANUS Studio®    Toolset can now be configured for use by others for system documentation, code transformation, and re-factoring. This new business model for the modernization of classified systems opens a vast array of opportunities for TSRI and its customer base. Our ability to address classified code using a Seat License format has already generated significant interest as is evidenced by the fact that we are today in discussions with a number of additional customers for the provision of similar classified code Seat Licenses.”

Ms. Lawrence will be presenting the results of this independent Army study during Track 3 in Ballroom E on Friday May 2 from 10:50 am to 11:35 am. The abstract for that presentation is:
The Software Engineering Center (SEC) owns and maintains a large volume of mission-critical, legacy software systems that are difficult to support and susceptible to security risks. A manual effort to redesign, develop, and deploy legacy software systems, potentially overwhelms SEC’s resource planning and budgeting.

This presentation will describe an automated technique that converted the Variable Message Format (VMF) Test Tool (VTT) from Ada to C++. The metrics established by this project have enabled SEC and other organizations to better plan language conversion processes and to accurately estimate conversion project schedule and budget details.

"TSRI Wins Major Cable Communications Software Modernization Project"

Kirkland, WA. (June 16, 2009) – A major Canadian cable telecommunication company has awarded a contract to The Software Revolution, Inc. (TSRI) to generate Application and Transformation Blueprints for that organization’s core business systems as a roadmap for its modernization into a modern object oriented language, platform and database management system.

Under this contract, TSRI provided the As-Is Application Blueprint of the VMS VAX Basic CBS system and a To-Be Transformation Blueprint consisting of side-by-side views of the code and the complete UML, OOA/OOD and SASDM design and architecture of the VMS VAX BASIC CBS along side its transformation into a To-Be Java system. In addition, TSRI provided engineering support services for the preparation of a transformation, re-factoring and reengineering plan to separate the legacy system user interface, business application and data access layers into a scalable N-Tier object-oriented application and convert the RMS database into an Oracle 9i RDBMS.

Philip Newcomb, TSRI’s Chief Executive Officer said, “TSRI is one of the few, perhaps the only company in industry that actually starts the modernization process for a client by capturing the complete Transformation Blueprint® as a roadmap towards the target systems code, design and architecture. Our client’s architects using JANUS Studio® Transformation Blueprint® work with TSRI to parameterize TSRI’s automated modernization process to their individual needs. Whether we’re modernizing legacy VMS VAX BASIC and RMS database into Java/JEE and Oracle for a business system, or we’re modernizing mission critical systems such the Cobra Dane ballistic missile early warning system or the European air traffic control system, I think the message is finally getting out there. The capabilities TSRI has for modernizing legacy applications into modern object-oriented languages and application architectures, relational and network databases is second to none, and we have the unblemished published track record to prove it.”

TSRI Modernizes European ATC

"Thales Air Systems Java Flight Data Processing (JFDP) European-E Air Traffic Management (EATMS) approved for operation in late 2010."

Kirkland, WA. (October 15, 2009) – Thales Air Systems (THALES) of France awarded a ‘follow-on’ contract to The Software Revolution, Inc. (TSRI) in April to modernize the Flight Profile Library (FPL), the core of the Java Flight Data Processor (FDP) of THALES Eurocat-E air traffic control system. Under this contract, TSRI automatically translated the FPL from Ada into Java, refactored the Java to remove dead code, refactored Ada generics into Java generics, and detected and refactored global variables to minimize their visibility as Java member data. Modernization of the FPL module completes a project spanning 4-years in which TSRI supported the modernization of three variations of Eurocat-E, comprising approximately 1.7 million lines of Ada code into real time Java. Automated code translation, code redundancy analysis and code consolidation techniques were applied to modernize the three primary variations of the Eurocat (comprising approximately 1.6 million lines of code) with unprecedented economy of scale and scope and with two to one improvement in key code quality metrics according to published case studies. The European aviation authority required automated code transformation be used to minimize introduction of human error during the modernization of the Eurocat system. The transformed Java Eurocat complies with safety requirements of Eurocontrol (ESARR6) mandates governing SoftWare Assurance Levels (SWAL assessment required for ground applications).

Thales Air Systems S.A. is a major global provider of air traffic management systems and The Software Revolution, Inc. (TSRI) is an industry leader in automated legacy system modernization. Thales Air Systems supplies Eurocat-E as the primary air traffic control system in Europe, Asia and Australia where Eurocat is installed at 260 air traffic control centers worldwide. The JFDP air traffic control system is scheduled to commence operation at the end of 2010 at airports all across Europe and Asia.

Philip Newcomb, The Software Revolution Chief Executive Officer said, “The Software Revolution is very proud to have played an instrumental role in the modernization of the European air traffic control system for Thales. A key to the success of this project was the use of JANUS Studio®    for automated transformation, refactoring and creation of the Transformation Blueprint ® to document the products and process. I believe the FAA could dramatically reduce costs as well as its 15-year schedule for the NextGen air traffic control system upgrade through the use of similar methods to those the Europeans have employed to modernize the European air traffic control system.”
